Anxiety: The Voice That Doesn’t Rest

Author: Dr. Jada Jackson, LMCH, LPC-S

I used to lay awake replaying every what-if scenario, as if worry could control the future. If you know that feeling, you’re not alone.

Anxiety starts in the amygdala, the brain’s fear center. It sets off alarms, telling the body to fight, flee, or freeze. But here’s the good news: we can train the brain to stand down.

Here’s how:

  • Box Breathing — Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. It tells your nervous system: you’re safe.

  • Name it to tame it — Labeling emotions activates the prefrontal cortex, calming the amygdala.

  • Pray your worries — Scripture and prayer regulate stress by shifting focus from fear to faith.

You are not your anxiety. You are a child of God, wired for peace and renewal.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
